At Baker & Baker, we’re very conscious of our sustainability and impact on this beautiful planet and are always looking for ways to reduce waste and tread more lightly. Here’s how we’re making a sustainable difference, in the workshop, on site, and behind the scenes.

Sustainably sourced Materials

We source timber locally through FSC certified yards. We favour British made products such as sinks, taps, and handles where possible and when budget allows, it keeps things closer to home and supports other British businesses.

All of our materials are carefully chosen for their quality, strength, and suitability, we want the things we make to last for many years to come.

To help us give back what we use, we plant trees through Ecologi, a climate platform supporting tree planting and other restoration work all over the world.

Zero waste approach

We’re big believers in finding a use for everything. Our sawdust goes to a nearby flower farm, where it’s put to good use on their beds. It’s a win-win and every now and then we’re sent back with a bunch of flowers or a jar or two of honey in return.

Offcuts are repurposed into smaller items or donated to local schools and charities. Even the tiniest pieces are bagged up for firewood. Very little goes to waste.
We’ve also switched almost entirely to water-based finishes, safer to work with, safer to dispose of.

We carefully consider everything we buy across the whole of the business. If we no longer have use for an item, we offer it out to friends, family, or via the marketplace, anything to keep it out of landfill. We really can’t bear to throw anything away.

Packaging

Instead of single use packaging, we use furniture blankets to wrap our cabinets and furniture for delivery. It’s simpler, less wasteful, sustainable and everything arrives safe and sound.

Tools & Machinery

We believe in repair over replacement and invest in well-built tools that are made to last. Much of our workshop machinery is over 60 years old and still going strong, proof that good kit really can go the distance.

[Pictured left] Is our oldest machine – A Wadkin Overhead Router built in 1969! It’s been part of the team since ’98 – nearly 30 years on, its still going strong!

Renewable Energy

Our workshop runs on solar power, and we’ve switched to low energy bulbs wherever we can. When we moved into our workshop in 2016, the building had been newly renovated and modernised ensuring efficient windows and doors to help conserve energy all year round and stay sustainable. This was a big selling point for us. Read our Solar Panel blog here.
